Samurai Pizza Cats Coming to DVD. All Of It.
After rotting in Saban's Licensing Pit of Doom for nearly two decades, Samurai Pizza Cats has finally been rescued by Discotek... a company that's been making some very notable acquisitions lately. They're worth keeping an eye on.

Not only is SPC coming to DVD just in time to join the escalating onslaught of 90s nostalgia pandering, but they're also doing a separate release for the original Japanese version of the show. I can't imagine who would possibly want that, but it will be there!

Not to be a dismissive prick, but I'm not feeling the hype. Is there some anomalous reason this is the one '90s property I'm not familiar with?
I mean, I remember Swat Kats and the Cadillac Cats.

It's not surprising that you haven't heard of it, because it was never very popular. But Samurai Pizza Cats isn't really like any of those other cartoons you mentioned.
Pizza Cats was an anime that was dubbed into english by a team that -- either intentionally or unintentionally, depending on who is being asked-- did not have access to accurate translations of the original show. So basically, they just made stuff up to go along with the footage. The result is a very intentionally absurd and suprisingly coherent mash-up.
Tonally, the show is undeniably very "early 90s", in that it's loaded with a lot of that very writer-driven sarcasm and 4th-wall breaking that was popular at the time. But it pushes it way, waaaay farther anything later shows like Animaniacs ever did. It's been a few years since I've seen it, but I remember it being pretty sharp.
Also, it had an incredible theme song.

The very mention of SPC - even the acronym - takes me back to 90s GHZ. It was one of several mysterious oft-mentioned Japanimations I had no conception of, like Lunar. (Or was that an RPG?)

This is happy news for my cynical heart.
However, I wonder if the show has aged well at all. I guess we'll see soon enough.

Sonic R is automatically the best Sonic racing game ever made, following the simple logic of NOT forcing Sonic to drive around in a vehicle that is (theoretically) slower than him.Popcorn wrote:Quick! Someone post a Sonic R review. Praise the transparency effects.
I can only hope it gets a sequel on Sega's rumored next gen "Dream" console--I mean, what else could they do, give Sonic some sort of wierd hoverboard-thing to ride instead?
