Capcom's Ghosts N Goblins series.

No games can beat these games in terms of difficulty. You play as a knight named Arthur in his quest to save a princess. Unfortunately, Arthur can only take two hits before dying. The amount of enemies in these games are just ridiculous. Not only you have to deal with tons of enemies, many bottomless pits await to kill you. Only easy thing to do in these games is to die.

I also think SA2 was kinda hard for me. The normal levels are okay, but hard mode is just pathetic. Weapons Bed and Mad Space hard mode almost drove me crazy.

Ghouls and Ghosts isn't that hard. The other games are near impossible, due to the insane platforming required while dodging enemies, without the ability to throw weapons up or down.
