Any Streets of Rage fans here? If so...

Post by Saturnman »

... I got another survey for you for a fan-art project!

Such a classic series as Streets of Rage and so little fan-art, in quantity and quality (though some of the Blaze art is pretty good ). I intend to change that, in my own small way. I would create a hand-drawn mega pic colored in Photoshop and/or Painter, in honor of the series. I don't pretend to be a pro, but I think I can do the series justice.

But before doing that, it might be a good idea to see how other SOR fans feel on certain issues concerning game hence this survey.

So, with your help, this can only make my pic a better one.

1. Favorite SOR game (restricted to Genesis)? Say why if you can.
a. SOR1
b. SOR2
c. SOR3 (specify which version, if you can)

2. Favorite recurring playable character? Specify if looks have anything to do with it.
a. Axel
b. Blaze
c. Skate (he was in two games)

3. Favorite unique playable character?
a. Shiva
b. Max
c. the kangoroo
d. the gay guy
e. Adam
f. Zan

4. Favorite enemy (too many to list, either name or describe them)?

5. Favorite stage (same here)?

6. Favorite boss (same again)?

7. Anything that happens in the series you would like to see illustrated in a wallpaper-sized mega pic ? Please do tell.

8. Anything that doesn't really happen in any game but would still like to see? Don't be afraid to share your fantasies, save for hentai.

And that completes this survey. Whatever you can contribute, I thank you in advance. Though I have no deadline, I would to do this pic within 2 months and as a courtesy, I would post it here.

Streets of Rage 1 is my favorite. I feel that the simpler graphic style sends itself to a certain timelessness, whereas the larger, more ambitious graphics in the sequels certainly impressed at the time, I'm more likely to notice (and be annoyed by) imperfections I see today. I find the gameplay in the first one to also be something that I "groove" into better. I just enjoy it more, even though it's less complicated. Also, calling for backup is way more awesome than a special move that drains your health.

I think Blaze is everyone's favorite, surely? Because she's HOT, and fast. I never liked Axel (white shirt and blue pants? He's the most boring game character ever!) and Skate, I guess I thought he was cool when I was 12 but now I realize how silly he was. I guess by SoR 2 the thing was just getting more ridiculous than I liked? I mean, obviously by 3 it had gone over the deep end..

Adam was my favorite from the first game (this was because a friend of mine refuses to play as anyone BUT Blaze) and Max never clicked with me. He's too slow and big. The less said about 3 the better.

I think my favorite enemy is the mohawk guys who move around with their backs facing the screen. My favorite boss is the moustached boxer with a moustache who wears a two-piece bathing suit in SoR2. Generally I like all the bosses in the first game, because they're all ridiculous (yes, I just said something about how I didn't like that aspect of the OTHER games), especially the ones who throw boomerangs. What is up with boomerangs! (Even those swat guys with the shields in Shinobi 3 use boomerangs!)

Favorite stage is obviously the elevator from the first game, where you could chuck enemies off the edge, and the background becomes more and more beautiful as the elevator rises. Also great music.

I'm too lazy to answer all the questions, but my favorite was also the first. I liked the calling for backup aspect way more than the special move that takes health, also I for some reason just found the graphics in two kind of ugly. I don't really remember three as well, since I only got to play it a few times, but I remember it being more similar to two. I didn't really have a favorite character, I'd just alternate each time I died, and even though he wasn't in the first game I probably liked Skate the best at the time anyway. My favorite enemy was the girl with the whip of course! Not really though, they were more annoying than anything, if I had to pick I'd go with the standard gangster guy with a knife that just held it out in front of him and ran straight. No stabbing or anything, just straight at you with the knife stationary. Favorite boss was probably the fat dudes that breathed fire, I'm not sure if they were in the first, I know they were in the second. I just thought they were so off the wall. My favorite moment that probably wouldn't translate to a picture very well was when in the first game where my friend accidently grabbed me. Rather than wiggling around to get free or him just bodyslamming me I pushed punch or something and did some crazy flip off him right as three guys walked onto the screen, it couldn't have been timed more perfectly since I took them all out. We had no idea we could even do that move up until then. Well, I guess I answered most of the questions anyway.

You guys are stupid. Calling for back-up was dumb and broke the flow of the game. SoR2's special attacks gave the game much more depth and helped keep the pace moving.

My favorite stage from SoR1 is the elevator stage, as G.Silv said. I don't think there's anyone that didn't love that stage. I mean, come on, you don't actually have to kill anyone yourself. Throwing badguys to their doom is much more fun.

Anyhow, SoR2 is definitely the best in the series. I like its art-style the best (sorry G), plus everything they changed in the gameplay was for the better, especially the ability to see the enemy's health bars. Also, don't knock Max. The only SoR2 speedrun I've seen used Max and was pretty ridiculous. That said, I always used Axel. His uppercut is awesome!

No, just Tekken. And any "3D version of a 2D franchise" attempts. Those are just guaranteed to be terrible.

Which leaves Virtua Fighter and Dead or Alive, and Soul Calibur, unless I forgot something, which I am sure I did. Dead or Alive is overrated, maybe I'm just not an expert on it, but characters like Ayane and Kasumi are way to freaking powerful when pitted against the big slow guys. Not to mention the game really hasn't changed since DOA2 was released on the Dreamcast. Yet some form of the game has been released another 4 or 5 times since then.

Soul Calibur and Virtua Fighter are good though.

1. Favorite SOR game
I'd say between 1 and 2, I preferred 2's graphics and gameplay, but SOR1 had Adam, so nuff said.

2. Favorite recurring playable character
Has to be blaze, I always preffered her costume in SOR1.

3. Favorite unique playable character
Has to be Adam, simple, no nonsense and a quick character to use, not bad for a boxer. Plus he had the coolest hair.

4. Favorite enemy
The clown guys from SOR1 who juggled fire and axes, that was pretty hardcore.

5. Favorite stage
Elevator in SOR1, what can be better than making human pancakes?

6. Favorite boss
Wolverine/Freddy Krueger clones in 1, they were fucking hard but pretty awesome in looks and moves.

7. Anything that happens in the series...
The helicopter scene when the guys get picked up in SOR2's ending.

8. Anything that doesn't really happen...
Adam landing a flying kick on Skate, yeah, brotherly love...

My favourite's gotta be SoR2. It was the first I ever played and indeed one of my first Megadrive games so I guess I could be biased ever so slightly, but I'd rate it above the other two any day of the week. It improved upon everything from the first, including getting rid of the ridiculous "call for back-up" special moves, tarting up the graphics and increasing the hummability of the music tenfold. SoR3, apart from some fresh new areas and a couple of interesting bosses (everyone likes robot clones) added nothing new to the formula and nowhere near represented a similar technical achievement to the improvements made between 1 and 2. Also, the music sounded like a sackful of saucepans in jet engine.

Favourite recurring character has to be Axel. Despite his relative lack of speed compared to Skate, to me he represents the "average" character with no major strengths or weaknesses and so you never feel like you're lacking in any area. He has a fair variety of moves and a good reach with his jump kicks, and you have to admit his uppercut is totally sweet.

Favourite unique character has to be Ash because he made me laugh until I cried.

If I had to choose a favourite enemy, I guess I'd take the generic "Garcia" enemies for their versatility (Look, he's jumping off a container to kick you in the head! Watch out, now he's got a knife! Utter madness) and the fact that they always get me with that annoying walk-straight-forward-and-stab-you move deserves some recognition.

Favourite stage is SoR2's Stage 4 for the music alone, closely followed by that pretty cool one in SoR3 where you save the president, all wrapped up by any stage with an elevator so you can chuck enemies over the edge.

I'd pick Ash for favourite boss if I hadn't already chose him above, so I'll go with Break just because I like robot clones.

I'd like to see all the stages of Mr. X in the picture, including his robot clones (woo!) and the ridiculous brain-in-a-jar thingy from SoR3. You need to get him in there with a tommy gun and a cigar, too. Also, try to incorporate the weapons into the picture, like by having the ubiquitous "Donovan" bad guy with a steel pipe.

Nobody here has claimed to not be a fan of Streets of Rage. What the hell are you talking about.

SoR2 is definitely my favorite. I've played it so much that fighting with Blaze is something almost natural.

Oh yeah, and I also liked Blaze's outfit from the first game better than 2 and 3 (especially the US silver recolor).

Just poking fun a bit. I wouldn't mind seeing that Tekken side discussion coming to an end either.

But I can see who feels more strongly about the series than others. And yes, SOR2 should be the favorite, it already is. I can accept dissenters, but to like SOR3, it must be solely a gameplay issue and for SOR1, well, it has to be nolstalgia.

What was the best bit in SOR2 though? Mine has to be the underground pit fight against the Ultimate Warrior type guy,
closely followed by the fight in the van.

Oh, dude - that game was chock full of classic...icity. You gotta love walking outside the bar in Stage 1 to come face to face with the apparently cowardly bartender who's suddenly grown two foot and bulked the hell up. Then he kicks you in the head before you can even say "chicken on a plate." I love the variety in the theme park areas too - ninjas on a pirate ship? It's so EXTREME!

Ninjas and pirates are always a winning combination, plus the background at that particular moment is pretty trippy.

Arr!

1. Favorite SOR game:
The 1st, if only because it's the one game in the series I actually played on a Genesis. Or played more than 3 times, for that matter.

2. Favorite recurring playable character:
Blaze.

3. Favorite unique playable character:
Zeta wrote:Roo is the greatest character ever.
Ash is the runner-up; might've made 1st if it weren't for his limited moveset. But yeah, you can't beat boxing kangaroos, however cliche.

Also, did anyone else notice how Ash giggles if you try to knee someone in the crotch?

4. Favorite enemy:
Omni Hunter wrote:The clown guys from SOR1 who juggled fire and axes, that was pretty hardcore.
Oh, and the chicks in black with the whips. Beating them over the head with a steel pipe only to see them scream and drop to their knees (Repeatedly) brought me great pleasure.

Oh, and the disco lesbians in SOR3.

5. Favorite stage:
The ninja subway in SOR3. Alligators in the sewers? Screw that, these are fucking subway ninjas. Oh, and they suck at dodging trains.

And the prerequisite elevator stage, of course.

6. Favorite boss:
The samurai in the subway dojo. He just oozed hardcore.

I can't believe I forgot the disco lesbians. I've let the whole team down.
